High School
Natalie Cohen – Editor In Chief
Natalie Cohen is a creative and ambitious high-school senior. When she isn’t painting or writing, you can find her reading through her growing pile of library books, watching and pretending to know how to critique films or collecting all kinds of bits and bobs to stick in her sketchbooks and on her walls!
The Comet: Why did you join the newspaper?
Natalie C: I joined the Newspaper Club in 2017 (when I was a freshman) and I’ve loved it ever since! At that point, I was just getting into writing and I wanted to join a club that would encourage me to write more; little did I know that I would fall in love with this club and strive to be a part of it every year since then!
The Comet: Explain your position/job in the newspaper.
Natalie C: This is my second consecutive year acting as a HS Editor-In-Chief. My job consists of helping to format the Newspaper homepage, aiding the other editors in their individual tasks, supervising the overall layout of each issue, as well as communicating with all the editors and the club adviser, Mr. Lawrence, in order to ensure that we can meet our publication deadline.
The Comet: What’s it like being an editor for the newspaper?
Natalie C: Being an editor for the newspaper is an absolute blast as I get to give kudos to staff writers on their submissions and work behind-the-scenes to help craft an amazing issue every season! I’m beyond grateful that I get to spend my last year at CCA doing what I love for this awesome club!
The Comet: What are your post-HS plans or career goals for the future?
Natalie C: After graduating, I plan on attending the Community College of Allegheny County for two years before (hopefully!) transferring to my dream school, the University of Pittsburgh. I strive to get my B.A. in English Literature or Creative Writing (still deciding!) and work in the publishing industry as I sell my art online and write my YA fantasy novel’s manuscript that, eventually, I hope to publish.
The Comet: Favorite movie/TV show/book?
Natalie C: My favorite movies include The Perks of Being a Wallflower and Her. Some of my favorite books include Radio Silence by Alice Oseman, The Astonishing Color of After by Emily X. R Pan and Sadness is a White Bird by Moriel Rothman-Zecher.
The Comet: Do you have any pets? If yes, what kind?
Natalie C: We haven’t had a pet since our cat, Max, passed away in 2015.
The Comet: Favorite subject in school?
Natalie C: My favorite classes this year would have to be AP English Literature and Gothic Lit. I’m getting to know so many new authors from both these courses and I love that Gothic Lit is encouraging me to stretch my creative-writing muscles!
The Comet: Finally, any hobbies?
Natalie C: My passions include art and writing. I try to keep up with sketching, drawing, or painting not only for my social media audience, but myself as well! Writing allows me to tell stories that I can’t through art, and because of this, I’ve been trying to execute more and more of my creative-writing ideas during quarantine. I also enjoy cooking, baking, journaling, and reading.
Azariah Akins – Co-Editor-in-Chief
Azariah Akins is currently a senior at CCA. She’s a lover of all things related to politics, books, and The Bachelorette. She plans to become a public policy lawyer after graduating from HS and Law School. You can find her writing love stories and daydreaming in her free time.
The Comet: Why did you join the newspaper?
Azariah A: I joined the newspaper during my junior year of HS, just wanting an outlet to showcase my creativity. I had been interested in majoring in Journalism at the time, but I had never been a part of an actual newspaper. I thought my school’s paper would be the perfect place to start. The year I joined the newspaper, I became copy editor and was able to learn many vital skills that have greatly benefited me.
The Comet: Explain your position/job in the newspaper.
Azariah A: This year, I am co-editor in chief. It’s a big deal to be trusted with so much responsibility, and the opportunity to be a leader. As editors-in-chief, Natalie and I are focused on overviewing the paper, working on the layout, finalizing the paper, and helping guide our editorial staff in the right direction. We work to make things a lot easier and answer any questions our staff has about the paper.
The Comet: What’s it like being an editor for the newspaper?
Azariah A: It’s a lot of work, but it’s a lot of fun. As a senior this year, I like being able to see that once I leave the newspaper is in really good hands with our editorial staff. All the reading and writing, and editing can be a lot, but getting to see the final product is so, so worth it!
The Comet: What are your post-HS plans or career goals for the future?
Azariah A: After high school I’ll be majoring in Political Science at a four-year university. I want to become a public policy lawyer and run for United States Senate one day.

Jillian L: Being an editor for the newspaper is an amazing experience. Finding a photo that corresponds with every article is honestly such a fun task. Jillian L: After high school, my hope and what I really want to do is to start a driving school that teaches teens how to drive. I would also like to start a cat café later on down the road.
