How to create your perfect, organized homework space

Cut the clutter and get organized this school year

Move over summer, a new school year is right around the corner!

Imagine a few months into the school year when your learner’s homework space is beginning to look like a giant clutter mound. The shorter fall days bring more activities and there never seems to be enough time to fully declutter and set up a functional workspace. There’s no better way to start a new school year than with an organized space to complete schoolwork.

To stop that mound of clutter from ever forming, follow these four easy tips to get your learner organized.

  • Create a color-coordinated folder system. Use a different colored folder for each subject, project or club that your learner will be participating in and keep them in an organizer. As papers start to accumulate there will be a clear, designated place to file them away. You will be amazed at how much workspace exists without stacks of unorganized papers.
  • Take inventory of supplies. Collect all of the pencils, pens, scissors, notebooks, highlighters and anything else needed for the school year that’s laying around the house. Assess what supplies you already have before buying anything new. You’ll be surprised at the number of usable school supplies you can reuse again. Work with your learner to find a single location to place all of the supplies conveniently in their study space.
  • Assess the technology. Before the hustle and bustle of the school year begins, prepare for nothing less than high-voltage studying. Do a test all of the technology to be sure it is working properly. Check cords to see what might need to be replaced due to fraying. Make sure that anything that needs a battery or a battery charger is all set.
  • Get out the disinfectant. After months of no use, your learner’s workspace has probably collected dirt and dust which lead to germs. Clean the space head to toe with a cleaner that will be tough on the germs. Keep the disinfectant nearby to prepare for the cold and flu seasons. Nobody wants a sick day.
