Interview with Madelyn B, Owner of Terrestrial Culture

    Written by Jillian L.

Are you looking for cute and affordable jewelry? Do you like crystals and supporting small businesses? Then, TerrestrialCulture might just be the Etsy shop for you! Run by fellow sophomore and my friend Madelyn B; you’re sure to find something that matches your style from her shop! In this interview, Madelyn answers some different questions about her shop so you can get to know what inspired her to start this business. At the end of the article, I’ll also feature some jewelry pieces I have from her so you can see what some of the products look like! If you’re interested, please check out her Etsy, TerrestrialCulture, and follow her on social media @terrestrialculture.
What made you want to start an Etsy shop?
Madelyn: I have always enjoyed making jewelry. I started out just making jewelry for myself. Because I love making jewelry so much, I was beginning to have too much for just me to wear by myself. I figured it would be a great idea to start my own business out of my passion!
What is the meaning behind the name of your shop, and what is the theme of your shop?
Madelyn: The word terrestrial means relating to the earth. Many of my jewelry pieces contain natural stones that are found in the earth. I sell many different styles of jewelry so that everyone can find something that suits their style!
Explain the whole process of opening/having a shop. What goes on behind the scenes?
Madelyn: The first step of opening a shop is to purchase all of the materials and supplies that you will need. For my shop, this included bubble mailers, organza bags to put the jewelry in, beads, wax cord, wire, business cards, and more. Next, you have to take good pictures to attract buyers. I also put a lot of time into marketing on social media.
Explain what type of jewelry you have in your shop. What is your favorite thing to make?
Madelyn: I sell seed bead necklaces, bracelets, and rings. I also sell pearl jewelry. I sell wire wrapped rings with many different types of stones. I also sell lots of different types of bracelets with different types of stones. One of my favorite things to make is the wire wrapped rings!
Where do you get supplies, and how long does it take to make things?
Madelyn: I get my supplies from various different craft stores along with Amazon. Each piece differs in the amount of time it takes. A ring can take anywhere from 10-20 minutes, and a necklace can take anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour.
What is your absolute favorite bead?
Madelyn: I absolutely love the flower millefiori beads. I love the way that they look on rings!
Do you think the shop has been successful so far?
Madelyn: I would consider my shop to be successful for the amount of time that I have been selling jewelry for. I currently have 59 sales and I have been open for about a month.
Anything else you would like to say? (This can be about anything).
Madelyn: I am always adding new styles of jewelry to my shop so there is a wide selection. I hope you can find something that matches your style!
