HARRISBURG, Pa. — Commonwealth Charter Academy (CCA), Pennsylvania’s largest public cyber charter school serving more than 11,000 students statewide in grades K through 12, this week awarded high school diplomas to more than 1,200 students during two nights of virtual graduation ceremonies. The virtual ceremonies served as a celebration for graduates who could not gather in person.
“While the global pandemic prevented us from celebrating with our graduates and families in person, we were still able to recognize the success and achievement of the class of 2020 in a unique and special way,” CCA President and CEO Dr. Maurice “Reese” Flurie said. “The CCA family is proud of our graduates and their families, and we wish them the best for a bright and prosperous future.”
CCA’s class of 2020 consists of students from 62 of Pennsylvania’s 67 counties, representing 93 percent of the state, and their plans include entering the workforce, continuing their education in college or a vocational or technical school, and enlisting in the military.
Six graduates were selected to speak during the graduation ceremonies. The Tuesday, June 16, ceremony featured the following student speakers: Jacquelyn Cress; Michelle Donaghy of Mechanicsburg, Cumberland County; and Kaili Enslin of Albrightsville, Carbon County.
The Wednesday, June 17, ceremony featured the following student speakers: Madison Lucey of Milford, Pike County; Kaleigh Sheridan of Coatesville, Chester County; and Beyonce Rodriguez of Easton, Northampton County.
During their remarks, the students emphasized the opportunities that CCA afforded them and commended their classmates on navigating the recent changes caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
“CCA’s graduates didn’t skip a beat during the pandemic when it came to continuing and completing their education,” Dr. Flurie said. “They and their CCA peers in grades K through 11 are well equipped with the skills and know-how in working in the virtual environment. Their ability to learn and communicate online, forge diverse relationships and manage their schedules should give all of us confidence in our future workforce.”
The ceremonies included a commencement address by Dr. Flurie and remarks by high school Principal Anthony Rusnak, as well as the traditional pomp and circumstance processional and recessional, announcement of each student’s name as it scrolled across the screen and congratulatory messages from high school teachers and staff.
