HARRISBURG, Pa. — Commonwealth Charter Academy (CCA), a Pennsylvania public cyber charter school serving students in grades K through 12, today participated in the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture’s 25th annual Farm City Day at the Pennsylvania Farm Show Complex & Expo Center in Harrisburg, where more than 1,000 students, parents and educators enhanced their agricultural education.

CCA showcased its fully functional, traveling, zero-waste ecosystem that replicates the aquaponics learning experience of AgWorks at CCA™ – the largest public educational aquaponics facility in the United States.

AgWorks at CCA™ is a Harrisburg-based 6,100-square-foot, state-of-the-art, living, learning laboratory that provides students of all ages with hands-on, career training in several industries, including aquaponics, hydroponics, aeroponics, engineering, supply chain management, data analysis, business management and information technology.

With the mobile unit onsite at Farm City Day, students from central Pennsylvania had the opportunity to participate in aquaponics activities and hands-on lessons enabled by live cameras, high-tech water monitoring sensors and an online digital dashboard that processed real-time data.

The traveling version of AgWorks at CCA™ not only is spreading awareness of the growing amount of agriculture and food-related careers, but it is allowing communities throughout Pennsylvania to participate in the experience and understand the impact of agriculture.

“AgWorks at CCA™ is an invaluable opportunity for students to learn about the careers agriculture can provide, including jobs in transportation, engineering, business, technology, sales and marketing, and trades,” said Samantha Johnson, director of aquaponics programs at CCA. “It’s important for future generations to have a profound interest in agriculture and technology so that we can continue to grow sustainable produce for the future.”

Farm City Day is a free, interactive agricultural experience in which students in grades 2-5 can discover the benefits of Pennsylvania’s agriculture industry, with the goal to engage students in agriculture by showing its relationship with science, math, nutrition, geography and more.

Farm City Day taught students not only where their food comes from but the importance of Pennsylvania’s farms – one of the objectives of AgWorks at CCA™.
