Students from Commonwealth Charter Academy (CCA), a K through 12 public cyber charter school, are supporting midstate communities this holiday season by applying their knowledge of agriculture to grow and harvest produce and donating it to the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank.

Student volunteers and interns from AgWorks at CCA™– the largest public educational aquaponics facility in the country – on November 21 harvested approximately 20 pounds of lettuce to be donated. Since the official launch of AgWorks at CCA™ in December 2018, CCA students have grown and donated approximately 380 pounds of produce to the food bank.

“We are grateful for the ongoing contributions from the students at Commonwealth Charter Academy to support the 135,000 people we serve every month,” said Joe Arthur, executive director of the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank. “The donations we receive are vital to achieving our mission of ending hunger, and it is encouraging to see these students join in that mission as they work to give back to their community.”

CCA is committed to preparing students for success beyond high school graduation. AgWorks at CCA™, under the CCAWorks™ Program, reinforces that commitment by creating unique learning opportunities focused around career readiness and productive community engagement.

“As a public school, it is our responsibility to the community and taxpayers to prepare today’s students for the jobs of tomorrow while teaching them the importance of giving back to society,” said Dr. Maurice Flurie, president and CEO of CCA. “AgWorks at CCA™ provides innovative, hands-on learning opportunities in which students and communities can benefit.”

Located in Harrisburg, AgWorks at CCA™ is the largest publicly accessible state-of-the-art, living, learning laboratory that provides students of all ages with hands-on career training in several industries, including aquaponics, hydroponics, aeroponics, engineering, supply chain management, data analysis, information technology, electrical, plumbing and HVAC, and more.
