Commonwealth Charter Academy (CCA) has shown ongoing support for the local community by donating student-grown produce to the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank, making continuous contributions during the closure of many Pennsylvania businesses as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.

During the month of May, CCA donated 148 pounds of aquaponically grown produce – including Salanova red butter lettuce, Salanova green sweet crisp lettuce, Breen lettuce, 5-star lettuce and champion collard greens – which equates to 1,106 main salads or 1,724 side salads.

This donation, combined with previous donations made during the pandemic, makes a total of 319.5 pounds of produce donated to help families in more than 25 counties have access to fresh food.

“Many families across the state and throughout the nation are facing significant challenges during this unprecedented time,” said Dr. Maurice “Reese” Flurie, president and CEO of CCA. “Even during this crisis, CCA’s educational programs teach students the importance of giving back to their communities and helping others. We are extremely proud of our students and their commitment to their fellow Pennsylvanians.”

Since 2018, CCA students have grown, harvested and donated approximately 800 pounds of lettuce to the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank.

At 6,100 square feet, AgWorks at CCA™ — located at the school’s Capital Campus in Harrisburg — is a PA Preferred, soilless, zero-waste ecosystem. It is the largest state-of-the-art public educational aquaponics facility in the United States. It uses technology and fish to fertilize and grow plants.

CCA is a public cyber charter school serving students in grades K through 12. Students throughout Pennsylvania participate in AgWorks at CCA™ in person and virtually.
