CCA Among 18 Charter Schools Nationwide Designated a 2026 Exceptional Charter School in Special Education

HARRISBURG – Commonwealth Charter Academy (CCA) is pleased to announce that it has been selected by the National Association of Special Education Teachers (NASET) as one of 18 charter schools nationwide to receive the 2026 Exceptional Charter School in Special Education designation.

“Receiving this recognition from NASET is a meaningful reflection of the work our special education team does every day to support students and families across Pennsylvania,” said Thomas D. Longenecker, president and CEO. “At CCA, we believe every student deserves access to an educational experience that meets their individual needs, empowers their growth, and prepares them for future success. I am incredibly proud of our educators, related services providers, and support staff for the care and commitment they bring to students each day.”

The NASET Exceptional Charter School award recognizes charter schools across the United States that have demonstrated a meaningful and measurable commitment to serving students with disabilities. Recipients are selected based on program quality, inclusive practices, and outcomes for students with special needs, reflecting the best of what charter education can offer this population.

With nearly 13,000 students with special needs enrolled, CCA is the most sought-after option for many Pennsylvania families seeking high-quality special education services. From responsive staff to highly engaged educators and related services providers, CCA is committed to providing students with the support they need to succeed.

“Supporting students with disabilities requires strong partnerships, individualized attention, and a deep commitment to helping every child reach their potential,” said Michelle Orcutt, provost of special education. “Our team works closely with families to create learning environments where students feel supported, encouraged, and capable of success. This recognition reflects the dedication our staff brings to that mission every day.”
