Throughout October, students and families from Commonwealth Charter Academy (CCA), a K through 12 public cyber charter school serving Pennsylvania families, participated in educational field trips to create awareness of careers in the arts.

In total, 89 field trips were offered to students of all grade levels. The educational trips were designed to engage learners interested in careers such as applied arts, music and sound, art studies and performing arts. The social trips provided students with purely fun outings such as Groovy Movie Night, Ropes Course and The Great Pumpkin Patch.

The career exploration field trips for October included a visit to Bluett Bros. Violins (York) for a lesson in the anatomy of sound, a tour of the Benedum Center for the Performing Arts (Pittsburgh), a tour of Asbury Woods Nature Center (Erie), activities at ArtsQuest Center at SteelStacks (Bethlehem) and workshops at Creative York, an arts studio and gallery (York).

“We look at the students’ curriculum and try to schedule some sort of field trip in each region to coincide with the topic they’re covering in their career class,” said Melinda Curran, CCA family involvement coordinator. “We want them to be ready to go out into society as they graduate from CCA, and we feel that this gives them an opportunity to develop their interests and make a choice for that as they approach adulthood.”

Enabled by the online school’s flexible learning schedule, CCA’s Family Services Department plans more than 500 field trips across the state each year.

With social and educational options available to students of all ages, the field trips provide learners with the opportunity to socialize with classmates, explore career paths, and build connections with teachers and staff.

Throughout November, field trips are being centered around careers in public service such as law enforcement, not-for-profit organizations and government positions.
