HARRISBURG, Pa. — Commonwealth Charter Academy (CCA) – a Pennsylvania K through 12 public cyber charter school – today announced that two of its high school students have won National Scholastic Art and Writing Awards, marking the first time that CCA students have been honored at the national level.
Natalie Cohen, a junior from Pittsburgh, won a silver medal for her work in the Science Fiction and Fantasy category. Her story, titled “Stop,” describes a world in which citizens are controlled by the government with strict work schedules and limited communication with others, to the point that everyone is forced to wear “Buds” in their ears to block out the world’s sounds.
Azariah Akins, a junior from Upper Darby, also won a silver medal for her work in the Short Story category. Her submission, “The Meaning of Flowers,” is a story about two teenagers who find romance while working together at a floral shop.
The Scholastic Art and Writing Awards is the largest and longest-running student recognition program in the country. This nationally recognized program awards students for their creative excellence in nearly 30 categories, including Architectural Design, Video Game Creation, Novel Writing and Journalism.
“On behalf of the CCA community, I want to congratulate Azariah and Natalie on this significant achievement and a job well done,” said Dr. Maurice “Reese” Flurie, president and CEO of CCA. “CCA’s educational programs allow students to expand their learning, grow academically and showcase their talent. Azariah and Natalie, as well as their families, have much to celebrate and are to be commended for their hard work and perseverance.”
Since 2010, CCA has been a proud regional sponsor of the South Central Scholastic Art and Writing Awards. By sponsoring the regional competition, CCA works to bring the community together in a way that inspires students to express themselves through creative work. Locally, the affiliate sponsored by CCA had 28 national awardees this year from 15 central Pennsylvania schools, the most in the 10 years since CCA began sponsoring.
