Gothic Literature

Fear plays an important role in society and history; it causes people to believe the unbelievable, to search for answers when there are none and to place blame on and accuse others without evidence or proof. Throughout Gothic Literature, learners explore these dynamics of fear, as well as discover its most popular purpose – to thrill. Through close analysis of critical literary elements like setting, mood and characterization in Gothic prose and poetry, the course sheds light on the history, architecture and psychology of this dark and disturbing genre.
