HARRISBURG – Commonwealth Charter Academy (CCA) is pleased to announce that it has been selected by the National Association of Special Education Teachers (NASET) as one of 24 charter schools in the United States as a 2024 Exceptional Charter School in Special Education.

“CCA is honored to have been recognized for the hard work and commitment to serving students with special needs and their families,” said Thomas D. Longenecker, president and CEO. “CCA’s Board of Trustees has provided the resources and empowered the administration to deliver high-quality educational programs and services to all students regardless of their abilities. I am proud that our special education team has gone above and beyond for our students and families. They deserve to be recognized for the hard work they do each and every day.”

To be eligible for recognition by NASET, CCA had to meet 11 criteria, including educating students with disabilities or other disorders, complying with the requirements of least restrictive environment, providing related services to eligible students as determined by their IEP, ensuring that students receive a well-rounded education to meet their individual, unique needs, and providing a multicultural environment.

With nearly 9,000 enrolled students with special needs – the highest of all cyber charter schools in Pennsylvania and the second highest among all public schools across the state – CCA is sought-after by many families because of the quality of its special education program. From responsive staff to highly engaged educators and related services providers, CCA is committed to providing students with the support they need to be successful.

“CCA’s special education department is comprised of highly qualified, dedicated professionals who are laser-focused on ensuring students with disabilities and their families receive the programs and services they need and deserve,” said Michelle Orcutt, provost of special education. “Our goal is to work closely with our students and families so they feel supported throughout their educational journey. We are committed to helping every student prepare for post-high school success.”
