English Language Arts 1 incorporates phonics, handwriting, reading, writing, and language into a comprehensive language arts program. Learners will understand the organization and basic features of print, explore spoken sounds and their printed form, and apply phonics and word analysis skills to decode words while building fluency and accuracy to support comprehension. Learners explore key details of texts, identify words and phrases that appeal to the senses, and compare and contrast a variety of topics within literary and informative texts. First grade learners will also be inspired to write narrative, explanatory, and opinion pieces. Through engaging texts, learners will explore digital citizenship, communities, the physical world, geography, plants and animals, goods and services, the Earth, and history.
