African American History

African American History, a semester course, will explore the long history and vital contribution of African Americans in the United States. Learners will build their knowledge of people and events such as African societies, the origins of slavery in the United States, the Civil War and Reconstruction through the era of Jim Crow, the Modern Civil Rights Movement, and modern issues of race in the United States. Throughout the course, learners will develop skills of historical analysis and critical thinking skills using primary and secondary sources. Practicing these skills, learners will survey the social, economic, and political experiences of African Americans over time.
