How Does Learning Environment Affect Academic Achievement?

How Does Learning Environment Affect Academic Achievement?

Crafting an effective learning environment for your child can boost their performance and foster a love of learning. This space should match their needs, learning habits, and independence levels to ensure they feel secure and supported. Keep reading to discover how learning environments can affect academic achievement and how to create a proper space for your learner.

The Learning Environment and Academic Performance

Your child’s learning environment plays a vital role in their academic performance. Our environments influence how we feel and think, and a well-designed learning environment can enhance academic performance.

Many factors can make or break a learning environment. For example, natural light can give us a boost by waking us up and letting us know it’s time to be productive. We become less sleepy and more alert when we experience natural light, making the daylight hours an excellent time to get work done.

On the other hand, nighttime studying can hinder learning. Computers, laptops, phones, and other digital devices all emit blue light, which prevents your body from releasing melatonin. Because of that blue light, using smart devices and other electronics late at night can make it hard to fall asleep. Studying on their computer at night or staying up to finish assignments can make it harder for your child to get a good night’s sleep and focus the next day.

What Is a Conducive Learning Environment?

A conducive learning environment is free of frustration and physical intimidation, enabling students to engage, learn, and exchange meaningful ideas. In these environments, instructors respect the student’s safety while the learner interacts with the materials and ideas. To establish this sense of security and support, you need:

    • A physical space that fosters learning and participation.
    • A feeling of community among students and teachers.
    • A positive and supportive culture.
    • Rules and structure that encourage students to cooperate.

Creating a Conducive Learning Environment at Home

Creating a conducive virtual learning environment can take time while you and your child determine what works best for them. Additionally, you will have to ensure your learner can engage with materials in the best way for them while feeling safe and productive.

Creating a conducive learning environment involves creating a physical workspace where students can boost their learning and stay productive. The environment will vary based on:

    • Your child’s age: Younger children can benefit from having a wide range of learning opportunities combined with a creative space for imaginative fun. Educational toys and age-appropriate books can go a long way in ensuring they foster a love of learning. Older children often benefit from having a quiet space where they can control what they see, hear, and experience. Work with them to determine space must-haves that will enhance their productivity rather than hurt it.
    • Your child’s learning habits: Every child learns differently. Some prefer to work with hands-on activities, while others like listening to or reading study information. Understanding your child’s learning habits can help craft a space that engages them. You can cater to their needs and ensure they can easily access the resources they need to succeed.
    • Your child’s independence: Although learning from home offers flexibility and freedom, some children may lack independence. At school, students are removed from their parents and can engage with their peers in a way that’s meaningful to them. At home, this freedom can feel out of reach, especially if parents are working from home alongside them. Work with your child to provide privacy and create an independent space where your child has control.

     The Physical Space

The physical space your child works in can hinder or boost their productivity and performance. You want to ensure they feel safe, secure, and encouraged in this space so they can work without interruptions and feel confident in their efforts. It’s important to keep a few things in mind when making this special place:

The physical space your child works in can hinder or boost their productivity and performance

    • Give them space to work: Find an open space where it’s easy for your child to concentrate without interruptions. The dining room table may have been a good fit when they started virtual learning, but creating a daily routine in a functional space will do wonders for your student.
    • Make sure they’ll be comfortable: A room with windows to allow natural light and proper airflow can help your child stay alert during the day, warm during the winter, and cool during the summer. Place multiple seating options around the room to let your child move from their desk to another location throughout the day. Finally, fill the space with vibrant pillows, blankets, and rugs to brighten the room.
    • Keep essentials within arm’s reach: Your student should have a central location for all the supplies and materials they need throughout the day. Having everything within easy reach will let them avoid breaking focus to search for information or resources.

    The Mental Space

The physical workspace is only part of setting your child up for learning success. Another essential aspect of an effective workspace is ensuring your child feels safe, secure, and confident. Keep these tips in mind to create a safe mental space for your child:

    • Offer silence: When learning at home, silence can be hard to come by. Having separate spaces can do wonders if you’re completing remote work or have multiple children home at once. Eliminating loud noises can reduce distractions and keep your child working longer.
    • Use timers: Using timers can help your child know when to move from one task to another. This strategy can help them devote enough time to each task and remember to take necessary breaks for things like stretching and eating lunch or dinner.
    • Reward your child: We all need external motivation sometimes and you don’t need to break the bank with expensive gifts. Treating your child to their favorite meal, a sweet treat, or a fun day in the park can help keep them motivated and let them know you appreciate their efforts.
    • Implement breaks: Taking breaks throughout the day can help prevent burnout and ensure your child stays refreshed and energized. Encourage your child to step away from the screen when eating meals and get outside to get some fresh air.
    • Ensure they sleep: A good night’s sleep and a routine sleep schedule are essential for a productive day. Have your child avoid electronic devices and sugary food and drinks that can keep them awake before bed. Establish a routine and help them stick to it.
    • Promote a positive attitude: Positive thinking can boost your child’s ability to learn and increase their motivation. Teaching positivity can help them set their sights on what they’re doing well and learn to accept mistakes as part of the learning process.
