LANCASTER – Christian Lurch, an 11th-grader at Commonwealth Charter Academy (CCA), took up archery three years ago after his father introduced him to a bow. Today, Lurch is ranked 11th nationally among males his age.

Christian recently placed second among male cadets competing in the USA Archery National Indoor Championships at Lancaster Archery Supply.

Christian, who lives in Breinigsville, Lehigh County, has attended CCA for three years. CCA is a public cyber charter school that offers students a personalized, flexible learning schedule to pursue passions and interests including sports, the arts and internships.

“CCA’s flexible schedule is exactly why Christian is able to spend the time he needs on archery,” said Christina Lurch, Christian’s mother. “Including travel to the Lancaster Archery Academy, Christian commits 25 hours a week to archery. But thanks to CCA, Christian can log in from anywhere to complete his schoolwork.”

As a junior in high school and a member of the Lancaster Junior Olympic Archery Development program, Christian participates in national competitions. In early February, he placed fourth at the Scholastic 3-D Archery Western Nationals in Las Vegas, with a score of 293 out of 300. He fell one spot shy of winning a scholarship. Christian will be in Ohio in early March to compete for a college scholarship and to improve his ranking.

“Through CCA and the Lancaster Archery Academy, Christian has been provided a way to have friends, stay social and travel while doing something he really enjoys,” Christina Lurch said. “And now Christian has his sights set on the next level.”
