CCA makes Read Across America Day fun, engaging for students

Cyber school to participate in children’s literacy event at Family Service Centers across Pennsylvania.

Beloved children’s author Dr. Seuss once wrote, “The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.”

Dr. Seuss was an active advocate for children’s literacy, which is why every year the National Education Association honors his birthday by hosting Read Across America Day on March 2.

For the second year in a row, CCA is inviting all students and their families to celebrate at Family Service Centers across the state.

“I think Read Across America Day is something all schools should be involved in,” said Melinda Curran, field trip coordinator for CCA’s South-central region. “It encourages kids to read and be more literate while bringing some fun into it.”

Last year, CCA brought in dogs from Susquehanna Service Dogs for the students to read to as part of the event. Reading to dogs can reduce anxiety in children who don’t like reading aloud. Attendees then watched Dr. Seuss’ “The Lorax.”

This year, CCA plans on expanding the event to allow more students to get involved.

“It was pretty popular last year. We had a great turnout,” Curran said. “This year, we plan on doing something a bit bigger.”

On March 1, students are invited to dress up in their brightest, silliest outfits and join CCA at one of these locations:

  • 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Capital Campus Family Service Center in Harrisburg
  • Noon-3 p.m. Dickson City Family Service Center

Dr. Maurice “Reese” Flurie, CEO of CCA, Thomas Longenecker, CCA’s chief operations officer, and Elementary Assistant Principal Justin Howard read their favorite Dr. Seuss books to the children. Flurie and Longnecker will be at the Capital Campus location, while Howard will be at Dickson City.

The kids will have the opportunity to participate in arts and crafts and other activities designed to make reading fun.

After the readings, CCA invites students and their families for snacks and a special viewing of the movie based on Dr. Seuss’ “Horton Hears a Who.”

For more information on how to register their children for this event, parents can webmail Melinda Curran.
