Learning coach outreach sessions boost confidence and knowledge for new CCA families

Summer outreach sessions provide new learning coaches and students with valuable information and an opportunity to connect with others in their regions.

If you're new to Commonwealth Charter Academy, our school offers a dynamic support team to help you navigate any challenges or questions you face as a new cyber school family.

As a learning coach, you are responsible for working with CCA teachers as partners in your child's educational experience. But you don't have to do it alone.

At CCA, we provide family mentors to guide new learning coaches through everything from signing up for field trips to navigating our learning management system. We also provide learning coach outreach sessions for in-person training.

CCA started hosting outreach sessions in 2008 after a survey revealed that learning coaches desired more advice on how to help their students.

This summer, new learning coaches and students have the opportunity to log on and receive face-to-face training on Connexus, CCA’s comprehensive online learning management system. This time also is used to manage student and parent expectations of CCA.

Summer outreach sessions will be held at various locations throughout August.

Typically, learning coaches and students are in separate rooms for training. This gives them opportunities to connect with other new families and ask specific questions about Connexus and their concerns. There also are features the learning coaches need to know that the students do not.

Teachers go step by step through Connexus’ functions, allowing time for the participants to practice what’s discussed. For example, when talking about the embedded assessments, they have learning coaches and students take a sample assessment, so everyone knows what to expect once lessons begin in the fall.

The summer sessions are directed toward new learning coaches, but those who joined late the previous year or otherwise missed last year’s session are more than welcome to join. To further help new learning coaches, CCA has compiled advice from seasoned coaches that will be available at the outreach sessions.

“Parents who attend a summer hands-on LCOS are more confident when starting the school year,” said Sara Bingaman, CCA’s federal programs manager.

It’s important to CCA that every learning coach and student is excited and confident going into the new school year. Because teachers are not in the classroom with students, learning coaches should know what they need to do when it comes to lessons, projects and navigating Connexus.

Learning coach outreach sessions in the fall will be a little different than the summer sessions. During the fall sessions, parents take part in a conference-type setting, with multiple teachers speaking on a variety of topics. Parents have time built into the day to network with other CCA parents.

While the parents are learning to help students at home, students can work with teachers to complete daily lessons. Throughout the day, teachers provide fun and educational activities.

In addition to the learning aspect of the outreach sessions, they provide learning coaches with time to speak to others who are new and get ideas about how to help their students reach their potential. New students connect with peers in the region and often form friendships that last beyond their time with CCA.
