A 7th grader at Commonwealth Connections Academy (CCA), Karson Hair of Mechanicsburg, Pa., recently received two awards at the first ever Alpaca Show at the 100th annual Pennsylvania Farm Show in Harrisburg. Karson placed third in the obstacle course and showmanship competitions.

CCA is a public cyber charter school with nearly 10,000 students across Pennsylvania. The school often holds field trips for its students to learn about potential careers, with an emphasis on careers in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) and the arts.

Karson’s interest in alpacas started when he attended one of his school’s field trips and was introduced to the student farming organization, the Cumberland County 4-H Club. Shortly thereafter, he began working with Cambria, the alpaca he showed at this year’s Farm Show.

“I didn’t even know much about alpacas until I went on the field trip,” said Karson, “It has been fun and challenging to work with the animals.”

The obstacle course involved the participants leading their alpacas through a set of challenges, including a jump, bridge and hula hoop. The Showmanship competition tested the trainer's knowledge of their animal and interaction with judges.
