The Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR), an office of U.S. Department of Defense, recently presented its “Patriot Award” to Samantha Johnson of York Haven, Pa., for her support of a Pennsylvania Army National Guard member who was recently deployed.

Johnson is an assistant elementary principal at Commonwealth Connections Academy (CCA), a statewide public cyber charter school. She was nominated for the award by her CCA colleague, Daniel Kysela, a high school social studies teacher and a Specialist First Class with the Pennsylvania Army National Guard.

Kysela, who teaches U.S. history to students in grades 9-12, recently was deployed overseas with his unit. Kysela also teaches elective classes in criminal investigations and homeland security and supervises the National Honor Society students at CCA. Johnson helped Kysela prepare for his deployment, including working with him to ensure his National Honor Society students were supervised in his absence.

“I wanted to make sure he knew our school was proud of him and his service to our country,” Johnson said. “But most of all, I wanted him to know that CCA supports our military personnel and that he will have a job here when he gets back.”

To reinforce that support, Dr. Maurice “Reese” Flurie, CEO at Commonwealth Connections Academy, signed the ESGR’s “Statement of Support for the Guard and Reserve,” which states CCA’s commitment to serving its military employees and families.

“Our school fully supports our colleagues who serve in the military,” Flurie said. “We find that Guard members, reservists and veterans make excellent employees. We are proud to have them working at CCA.”

Jim Astor, a retired US Air Force Colonel and a volunteer with ESGR, presented the Patriot Award to Johnson at a ceremony at CCA’s Crums Mill Family Service Center in Harrisburg.
